The word literally means “burnt earth”. Varied objects are made with clay either on the potter’s wheel or shaped by hand and then fired at a temperature of 1000 degree centigrade. The art form had been around in India since the ancient times, as is evident from the articles found from Indus valley civilization sites or the Terracotta Temples of Bishnupur in West Bengal.
